GUI-based software coded in PYTHON to promote throughput image processing and analytics of a big dataset of satellite imagery and provide spatiotemporal monitoring of crop health conditions throughout the growing season by automatically illustrating 1) a field map calendar (FMC) with daily thumbnails of vegetation heatmaps in each month and 2) a seasonal Vegetation Index (VI) Profile of the crop fields. Output examples of FMC and VI Profile are found in files named in fmCalendar.jpg and NDVI_Profile.jpg, respectively, which were created satellite imagery on 5/1-10/31 in 2020 from a sugarbeet field in Moorhead, MN.

Intended use

iCalendar software automates image processing and analysis of satellite imagery from PlanetScope Scenes (PSScenes) such as PS2, PS2.SD. and PSB.SD with a resolution of 3 m/pixel to provide spatiotemporal monitoring of crop health conditions during the growing season. The software offers a batch process of NDVI and\or FMC for individual area of interest (AOI) and also allows a bundle for all AOIs per season.

Use limitations

iCalendar supports image dataset from PSScenes. File/folder structure in batch process may need to be adjusted to read other satellite imagery. Image download is either with no clipping or clipped by AOI including other filtering conditions of time, cloud, coverage, image types, color map, etc. Software update is planned to include GUI-based Planet bulk download API. Image dataset of PSScene is accessible via web portal or bulk downloader API using a Planet API Key given with a license agreement.
