Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii str. W23 Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii str. W23(= BGSC 2A9 = NRRL B-14472), along with B. subtilis 168, are the two primary laboratory strains used during the 50-year history of B. subtilis genetics. Many B. subtilis legacy strains are actually genomic hybrids of 168 and W23. The W23 genome sequence will assist researchers in recognizing non-168 sequences in laboratory strains. Further, W23 and 168 represent two distinct subspecies of B. subtilis. Comparative genomics will allow deeper insights into bacterial genome evolution.
It is recommended to cite the accession numbers that are assigned to data submissions, e.g. the GenBank, WGS or SRA accession numbers. If individual BioProjects need to be referenced, state that "The data have been deposited with links to BioProject accession number PRJNA38713 in the NCBI BioProject database (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bioproject/)."
