A bacterial strain isolated from the intestine of Fundulus heteroclitus (a species of killifish commonly known as the mummichog) was shown to possess antimicrobial activity towards several Vibrio spp. fish and coral pathogens. Sequence analysis indicated the strain, named ISO12, is a Shewanella species and possesses marinocine-encoding genes, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial protein, which likely plays a role in the isolate's ability to inhibit pathogen growth. As such, ISO12 has been studied for its potential as a probiotic in marine aquaculture and its genome sequence will assist in identifying other genes and processes relevant to this activity.
