Paenibacillus terrae NRRL B-30644 was found to show antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria (notably Campylobacter jejuni). This strain was shown to produce both a novel lantibiotic (paenicidin B) and the non-ribosomal tridecaptin A. Within the genome, the biosynthetic machinery responsible for the production of these antimicrobial peptides was identified, in addition to several other non-ribosomal peptide syntheses. This strain may show promise for limiting the presence of C. jejune in poultry food products.
