The second step in the aerobic nitrification process is the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate by nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The genus Nitrobacter are r-strategist NOB that co-exist with more numerous k-strategist NOB Nitrospira in many environments. Nitrobacter play an important role responding to large nitrite concentrations in soils and other systems.
