We examined the bacterial microbiota composition from guano of two common species of bats in the United States, Big brown (Eptesicus fuscus, Beauvois, 1796) and red (Lasiurus borealis, Muller, 1776). We used 16S rRNA Illumina amplicon sequencing and functional profiling to examine the community composition in relation to the species, diet, and sample collection date. 16S data are usefule for further studies examining the evolution and comparative microbiotas of bats and other mammals.
