Identification resources for ECFF, Rhagoletis cerasi

dataset
posted on 2024-09-29, 07:00 authored by Wayne State University
Recently, the European cherry fruit fly (ECFF), Rhagoletis cerasi, was introduced into North America. Although it has been trapped in and its range is currently restricted to Niagara Country, New York, evidence suggests the fly could establish populations in many parts of the United States. As a result, the fly is a quarantine pest of cherries in this region. To better control routes of invasion, there is a need to determine the source population(s) in Europe and/or western Asia of the ECFF introduction in the United States and elucidate if the fly has invaded once or multiple times independently. This suggestion aims to use population genomics sequencing to genetically compare recently established ECFF in the United States to native populations from various locations across Europe and western Asia to determine the geographic source of the ECFF introduction. This will support the identification of high risk pathways to aid in pest exclusion and potentially elucidate the route of introduction for this pest species and help curb its movement in the future. Here, we submit the raw paired-end Novaseq S1 Illumina reads generated from 192 flies.
