This database includes scanned historical file photos on index cards from U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service research activities and topics of interest from 1948-1980 for the Pacific Northwest Research Station, Juneau Forestry Sciences Laboratory (FSL) in Juneau, Alaska. This includes research sites, sites of local interest, cultural and natural features, people, equipment, businesses, and daily work and life. The photos were taken at various locations throughout Alaska, including the Tongass and Chugach National Forests and the interior of Alaska. Documentation such as date, description, location, people, keywords, and more is provided for each photo as available. The description for each photo was transcribed from the original photo cards.
The USDA, Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station, Juneau FSL has been organized under several names. To aid in the search and understanding of the images contained in this database, a brief history of the Juneau FSL organization during the 1948-1980 timeframe follows. The Juneau FSL was first established at Juneau in 1948 as the "The Alaska Forest Research Center," which also included research programs in Fairbanks. On July 1st, 1961, it was reorganized as the “Northern Forest Experiment Station.” In 1966, the Experiment Station was assigned to the Pacific Northwest Research Station (also known as the Pacific Northwest Forest Experiment Station, and the Pacific Northwest Forest and Range Experiment Station) as its “Institute of Northern Forestry.” Just one year later, in 1967, it was established as a “Forestry Science Laboratory.” The Alaska Forest Inventory and Analysis unit was housed at the Juneau Lab until being transferred to Anchorage in 1978, creating three established Pacific Northwest Research Station offices in Alaska: Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. Preserve historical photos from multiple scientists and studies mostly in southeast Alaska in the Tongass National Forest, but also including projects in the interior of Alaska and the Chugach National Forest, Alaska. This package was published on 10/19/2021. On 10/27/2021 and 11/05/2021 minor metadata updates were made.
