We tested the hypothesis that coevolution underlies the persistence of horizontally transmitted mutualisms. Specifically, we assessed the roles of pairwise and diffuse coevolution by testing for specialization within and across host species with their mutualistic symbionts. We tested our hypothesis by leveraging the interaction between the squash bug Anasa tristis and its horizontally transmitted bacterial Caballeronia spp. symbionts.
It is recommended to cite the accession numbers that are assigned to data submissions, e.g. the GenBank, WGS or SRA accession numbers. If individual BioProjects need to be referenced, state that "The data have been deposited with links to BioProject accession number PRJNA813580 in the NCBI BioProject database (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bioproject/)."
