Escherichia coli strain ATCC 700415 is a naturally occurring, Gram-negative, enteric bacterium that was isolated from a woman with cystitis (bladder infection). This strain possesses virulence factors consistent with Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). Urinary tract infections could be considered a form of foodborne illness, as meat and poultry are routinely contaminated with UPEC. Urinary tract infections can occur after consumption of contaminated food, colonization of the distal colon by UPEC, followed by accidental transfer of contaminated feces from the anus to the urethra. In this study, we fully sequenced and annotated Escherichia coli ATCC 700415 to further elucidate the genome and to facilitate research on the detection and control of UPEC in foods.
