Data from: Two Years of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Data from the Gulf Atlantic Coastal Plain LTAR Network Site
These data were collected throughout the 2018 and 2019 growing seasons from fields of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) near Tifton, Georgia, USA. The data were intended to provide validation data for models of cropping systems describing plant water content (derived from above ground biomass), soil moisture, crop height, and phenological stage. This field campaigns were accomplished by researchers at the Gulf Atlantic Coastal Plain site of USDA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) Network, which is managed by the USDA-ARS Southeast Watershed Research Laboratory in Tifton, GA.
Field data for both years were collected from two farms. Detailed methods are described in an accompanying data paper. These data were intended for use to validate models of cropping systems that use remote sensing data, including optical imagery and synthetic aperture radar. There are eleven files in this collection:
- General information on the crop and field data (CottonCropData_2018_2019_ACF_TCF.xlsx)
- Field measurements of cotton from the Ashburn Cooperator Farm in 2018 (ACF_2018_f.xlsx)
- Field measurements of cotton from the Ashburn Cooperator Farm in 2019 (ACF_2019_f.xlsx)
- Field measurements of cotton from the Ty Ty Cooperator Farm in 2018 (TCF_2018_f.xlsx)
- Field measurements of cotton from the Ty Ty Cooperator Farm in 2019 (TCF_2019_f.xlsx)
- Management information for Ashburn Cooperator Farm and Ty Ty Cooperator Farm (Management_cotton_2018_2019_f.xlsx)
- Site map figure from data descriptor paper (SiteMap_Figure.docx)

Ag Data CommonsIntended use
While these data were collected to contribute to the studies incorporating ground truth measurements for remote sensing-based models of cropping systems, they may also prove valid for other research questions, such as those related to scaling above-ground biomass measurements, and evaluating the within-field variability of growing conditions. These data are available for use by anyone seeking data about cotton cropping systems.Use limitations
These data are ready for use with a geographic information system (GIS), where a geospatial feature layer is provided along with the data tables in the repository. The join field (IDKey) can be used to join spatial data with any of the four data tables in a one-to-many relationship. Software amenable to this analysis includes Esri ArcGIS Pro, and QGIS, among others. The spatial resolution of any subsequent analyses using these should be limited to an area no smaller than the area of the plots (30 m x 10 m) as a minimum mapping unit.Temporal Extent Start Date
