The files “dataTable2023.csv” and “dataTable2024.csv” contain measurements of surface shear forcing along the side of a honey mesquite shrub (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) in a sparsely vegetated dryland. The field experiment was conducted at a National Wind Erosion Research Network site at the Jornada Experimental Range (https://winderosionnetwork.org) in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA (32.6271°N, 106.7387°W, ~1320 m AMSL). Data were collected to quantify the spatial and temporal variations in surface shear forcing, to examine how surface shear forcing along the side of the shrub responds to vegetation phenology and wind speed, and to characterize the distribution of flow acceleration and sheltering.

For details on the experimental setup and data analysis, please refer to the accompanying paper: “The Spatial Distribution of Surface Wind Shear Velocity Around a Shrub in a Sparsely Vegetated Dryland”.

Key to variables:

DateTime (MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm): Timestamp of each sample.

Phenology (categorical): Vegetation phenological stage.

*_SSR (columns 3—20, dimensionless): Surface shear stress ratio at each location. ‘NaN’ indicates missing values. The spatial distribution of locations is shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying paper.

*_SSRmax (columns 3—20, dimensionless): Maximum surface shear stress ratio within each time interval at each location. ‘NaN’ indicates missing values. The spatial distribution of locations is shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying paper.

Direction (°): Wind direction relative to true north, (0=north, 90=east, 180=south, 270=west), indicating the direction the wind is coming from.

Wind_Speed (m s-1): Streamline wind speed.

Shear_Velocity (m s-1): Turbulent shear velocity.
