English boxwood (Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa') is a susceptible cultivar to boxwood blight but displayed divergent tolerance to the disease after being inoculated with the pathogen, Calonectria pseudonaviculata (Cps). This project investigated the association between the variation and the cultured endophytes to understand the role of the microbial communities in the gained resistance. Metagenomic sequencing of endophyte culture DNA of representatives revealed that dominant endophyte taxa, particularly fungi, in resistant plants were less complex than in susceptible samples. The result may be used to select resistant plants, conserve extinct plants due to disease control procedures, and use probiotic endophytes.
It is recommended to cite the accession numbers that are assigned to data submissions, e.g. the GenBank, WGS or SRA accession numbers.
