Columbia Basin potato purple top (CBPPT) phytoplasma is a 'Candidatus Phytoplasma trifolii'-related strain. The CBPPT phytoplasma was identified from diseased potato plants growing in a production field located in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The phytoplasma is also known as beet leafhopper-transmitted virescence agent (BLTVA) and has a wide host range. Infection of the CBPPT phytoplasma in tomato can induce a series of remarkable symptoms including big bud, cauliflower-like inflorescence, disrupted sympodial growth pattern, witches'-broom, and purple top.
