The Cattle Genome Sequencing International Consortium, led by the Baylor College of Medicine, originally sequenced the Bos taurus genome at 6x coverage using a whole genome shotgun (WGS) strategy. The initial assembly (Btau_4.2) was later replaced by newer versions by incorporating high quality finished data, where available (Btau_4.6.1). The latest version takes the UMD 3.1 assembly contigs and scaffolds and incorporates ~19x Pacific Biosciences long-read data using the PBJelly method (English, Richards et al. 2012).
It is recommended to cite the accession numbers that are assigned to data submissions, e.g. the GenBank, WGS or SRA accession numbers. If individual BioProjects need to be referenced, state that "The data have been deposited with links to BioProject accession number PRJNA12555 in the NCBI BioProject database (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/bioproject/)."
