The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of antibiotics on swine intestinal microbial communities. Our approach was to assess the microbial communities of medicated and unmedicated pigs by using shotgun sequencing on fecal genomic DNA. We show that antibiotic resistance genes increase in abundance and diversity in the swine microbiome in response to antibiotic treatment.
