Metagenome analysis of Diaphorina citri from different geographic locations identified a novel, bacterial endosymbiont present in an insect population originating from Hawaii. Closely related to another insect-associated bacteria, Asaia, it is recalcitrant to culturing and has been given the designation Candidatus under a novel genus and novel species: Kirkpatrella diaphorinas.
